Hi, I’m happy your listening.

In this video, we’re going to learn about long vowel sounds.

But first, we have to talk about the magic ‘e’.

It is also called the silent ‘e’.

If you add an ‘e’ to the end of a word, the short vowel sound in the middle of the word magically changes to a long vowel sound.

We do not say the ‘e’ because it is silent.

For example, “rat”.

“Rat” uses the short ‘a’ sound.

“a”

But, if we add an ‘e’ at the end of the word, it becomes “rate”.

“Rate” uses the long ‘a’ sound.

“a”

But, take away the ‘e’, and it goes back to “rat”.

Another example is “sit”.

“Sit” uses the short ‘i’ sound.

“i”

But, if we add an ‘e’ at the end of the word, it becomes “site”.

“Site” uses the long ‘i’ sound.

“i”

Now, take away the ‘e’, and it becomes “sit” again.

Let’s review.

“rat”
“rate”

“sit”
“site”

I hope you understand.

Let’s practice some more.
